CONVICTION Is A Denver Center Theatre Company commission. (Winner of the prestigious TheatreNetto Festival Prize in Tel Aviv)
By Oren Neeman. Directed by Jeremy Cole and Ami Dayan. Featuring: Ami Dayan, Robert Mason Ham, Julie Rada, and Michael Shalhoub.
Conviction is a true story of faith and forbidden love in the shadow of the Spanish Inquisition.
In Franco's 1960s Madrid, an Israeli scholar is detained and questioned by a Spanish official for stealing a confidential Inquisition file. Together, the interrogator and interrogated become drawn to the file's wrinkled yellow pages and unravel the ill-fated love affair between the converted Spanish priest, Andres Gonzales (1456-1485), and his Jewish wife, Isabel.
Conviction received the prestigious 1996 TheatreNetto Festival Prize in Tel Aviv and played for five seasons in the repertoire of Habima, Israel's National Theatre. In 2008, an adaptation by Ami Dayan was commissioned by the Denver Center Theatre Company, (Kent Thompson Artistic Director). The piece has was performed and developed at the Victory Gardens Theatre in Chicago, The Rubicon International Theatre Festival in California, and The Denver Center Theatre Company. An Off-Broadway production of Conviction is slated for early 2010.
